Pattern Mixing

Normally I can't stand pattern mixing. A lot of people try it and think it's "fashion." In my opinion it isn't, which is why I found it so funny that I reached for this gingham crop tank and this polka dot Comme des Garcons x H&M sweater. While I'm not making this a regular habit, I can appreciate the idea. The key is to have one matching color present in both pieces and to limit the change in shades. If you're mixing with basic primary colors don't foray into pastels, and vice versa.

The Kimono

Where to start with this 70s kimono...... Um..... I almost can't comprehend I own it. Hands down in the top 5 pieces of my wardrobe. I don't think words can suffice. The blue lining in the sleeves is amazing... the structural print incredible, its in perfect condition. Really, one of a kind. Thank you, Urban Outfitters vintage online.

This lace camisole top I bought at the Fairfax Flea market several months ago. Last time I wore it was at FYF, so this is its second debut. It's oversized, but I love it that way, kind of allows you to wear only a bra underneath and get away with it. Oh, and how awesome are these Marni at H&M platforms? They are in exactly the same 70s theme as these JBrand bell jeans and leather cross-body bag. I decided to join the H&M/Marni craze last Thursday with my best friend (first collaboration opening I've ever been to) and it was a lot of fun. Went away with exactly what I went there fore. Perfect.

Also, thanks to Jackie's Nails on Fairfax for my manicure! Exactly what the doctor ordered on Saturday after I took the SAT for the first time. By the way, things are moving forward for my plans this summer and I can't be more excited. Life is really interesting right now.

Detail of the Day: Penelope and Coco Brogues

IMG_8582IMG_8569
Decided to do a new feature on the blog called Detail of the Day. As people pretty much say, it's all in the details, and I think outfit posts sometimes don't get it all.

For the first spotlight, I chose these amazing studded brogues that Penelope and Coco sent over a couple of weeks ago. These shoes are the quintessential pair of flats you can wear anywhere, anytime. I know I'll be so sad when I wear these babies out, which is why I've vowed not to wear them to school (the shoe graveyard) and only for really special occasions. The studded detailing is flawless. In regards to the brand, Penelope and Coco continuously churns outphenomenal pairs of footwear. I particularly have my eye on their new spring wedge the Quincy. You can read more about Penelope and Coco here and shop it here.

Candy Stripes

I am in love with this outfit, not because of any particular belief that I am a genius at outfit making, but because of the colors. White and red, so simple. It's like all of February (in theory) in an outfit. Unfortunately, I didn't get these photos up in time for the end of February, but early March is just as good.

The silver bow is actually a pin which I pulled through a velvet choker I had lying around. Then I acted like it was a real live bow tie and strung it around my neck under the white collar. I will admit I was pretty proud of myself for this one, you'd have to know that I am not handy/DIY oriented whatsoever, so this was a particular accomplishment.

Crystal Castles

A friend of mine starting producing these amazing crystal + bullet shell pendants and I finally picked up a couple for myself. A couple days ago I had this incredible (and violent) dream in which I was being pursued by a bunch of people who didn't speak my same language and I ended up saving the day by whipping out two bullets that were strung around my neck. I thought that by actually having some bullets (albeit in this case, harmless ones) on a chain could remind me stay powerful and in charge in real life? Something like that.

The guy has a plethora of different crystals and colors to choose from and you can read all about crystals healing powers here, (I'm a firm believer in them, just search "crystals" in the blog search bar for proof).

Sherlock Inspiration

Tweed overcoats, black scarves, wool vests, white button-ups, tailored separates, and that funny little hat...
Photobucket
I'm finally posting the inspiration board for Sherlock Holmes that I made weeks ago! This is everything Sherlock related. From the old classics to BBC's freaking genius rendition with Benedict Cumberbatch, (I love him), to Robert Downey Jr. & Jude Law in the most recent films, it's all here. I also included some stills of Rachel McAdams as Sherlock's great rival (and lover) Irene Adler. Even though I'm enjoying the manly/dapper vibe here, I marvel at her ability to switch from a blue stain ballgown to tweed mens chaps in one film and still look beautiful, feminine, lovely etc. etc. in all of it. I want my wardrobe to have that type of versatility while still maintaining a common thread. This idea is coming closer to fruition, especially considering that I just unwrapped a tweed blazer that arrived from the cleaners today. Slowly but surely my Holmes closet is pulling together.

Stay tuned for another post this weekend!
