Striped Up

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
This is my favorite sweater, Ive been eagerly awaiting putting it on but its been so hot. Ive taken a little break from AP homework to write this post, its been too long, I have so many things going on, I helped throw a party on Saturday and it was the most fun Ive probably ever had in my life, and Im listening to Marvin Gaye. Oh and Ive been going crazy about Verameat jewelery.

Los Angeles high school/teenage style is fairly interesting, especially when you start talking about the social standards that go along with it, and facebook, and the valley kids, and the "King of the Valley Kids." Most of the time the teenagers I hang out with, and the teenagers I see, basically all like to wear earth tones, vintage pieces, florals, and lots and lots of messy bracelets. Theres something about the way these kids dress that's very precious and very sloppy, sometimes a little worn down, all at the same time. For instance, a girl at my school one time wore a big floppy bow in her hair one day that was falling halfway off her head, but she didn't seem to care. Its kinda like, this might not fit me, but Ill wear it anyway cause its standard "cool." Or something. Im not necessarily saying this is bad or good. Im still lacking the words to accurately describe the social style around me. Ill keep working on it.

Topshop striped sweater, Marc by Marc Jacobs studded bag, flea market boots, American Apparel tights, Nars lipstick in Heat Wave.

you're so lucky you live in a place where all teenagers dress how they want to and so stylishly. i love this outfit and especially your boots. i would like to live in LA one day, it's such a beautiful place with amazing people.

I went to a Southern California high school that was exactly like that. You summed it up perfectly! It was such a weird place. It was like they all tried to "out-unique" each other with their style, but in that same way, they were all exactly the same...I don't even know. It was just a bizarre way to grow up.

Cool that they are dressing how they want:)

And glad you got to finally wear the sweater!

On the contrary, wearing something just because it's "standard "cool"" is not cool. Haha...maybe they could learn a thing or two about personal style from you ;)

love your mj studded bag <3 the teens around you sound so stylishly dressed up. where i stay, we usually have to be in uniforms until we reach college/tertiary education.. but even then, the common get-up would be the usual tees, shorts, flipflops.. perhaps you could snap a few pics & show us what your friends wear! would really look forward to that :)

I'm from Auckland, NZ and it sounds like the teenage style at home is very similar to where you are from. MInd you, maybe I fall into that category too cause I do wear anything I really like even if it doesn't fit me?? hmmm
Anyway, I'm jealous of your boots! What a lucky find

Great sweater, I love it paired with those boots...all you can do is be you, but for some high school-aged kids, the last person they want to be is themselves...sad!

Oh wow, that sounds so different to the style in my school - when it comes out to play on mufti days. The boys just wear jeans + cool T-shirts, and the girls range from unique personal style to the usual denim shorts + top and tights + skirt/dress/shorts + top combo...

i love that sweater, so cute. (and looks comfy, too, which is like a bonus.)

your little comment about being king of anything reminds me of a song by sara bareilles with the same name..although i don't think there's much of a correlation between the two.

uh-oh, i'm babbling again. keep up the lovely posts darling.

I love the MJ bag. I never would have thought to pair it with that sweater but it looks very good. I wish people were at least that stylish at my high school. Sadly I'm surrounded by sweatpants and t-shirts all day.

You know what? I know EXACTLY how you feel. I go to FIDM in LA right now and I went to high school in Burbank, so everyone is the same. The sad part is they styles haven't gotten better from high school to FIDM. I don't understand how half of the kids that go there can be in fashion, all they wear are leggings, boots, and flowery shirts from forever21 and call themselves fashionable. It's nice to know somebody feels the same way!

I grew up in The Valley in LA. I went to high school in the 90s and back then...all the girls looked exactly the same. None of them had any style whatsoever. I was considered a "freak" because I tried some different things and it made me a complete outcast.

What a difference 10 years makes! Consider yourself lucky to be able to express yourself through fashion without getting food thrown at you!

Hi! I just discovered your blog and I really like it! Also, maybe you get that a lot (or maybe not, I don't know how famous she is in the US) but you look like Charlotte Gainsbourg a lot!
