Tall Grass

Target white loose tee, vintage levis cutoffs, red converse low tops
I guess some people may ask "Why the heck do you spend as much time and money on clothesas you do?" Its a valid question. Why do I spend $210 on a pair of heels that I will probably only wear a handful of times? There are people out there that probably think that I dont have an answer for them, that I dont know why I have this blog or wear what I wear. The thing is, I do.

Picture a mountain of clothing on the floor. Its messy. Its chaos. You glimpse brands, names, designers, colors, patterns. Volcom, Marc Jacobs, Forever 21, neon, checkerboard, plaid, yellow, ribbons, satin, stripes, paint splatters, cotton, denim, houndstooth. This mountain of chaos and fabrics and patterns and names is basically nothing. Its a pile of clothing on the floor. Thats it. But maybe you go to the pile and you pick out a silk turquoise batwing top and light blue denim cutoffs and a navy tulle scarf and some yellow neon jelly flip flops. Suddenly its something.

I love taking pieces of clothing and putting them together to create something. To give an image of something. To basically make art. Whether it be rock n roll, punk, goth, glamour, 80s, sophistication, I love making these pieces that are basically nothing until you put them on and do things with them. I love describing clothing. Theres something so satisfying about being able to identify what youre doing or what youre wearing. Like... a butter leather black motorcycle finished with silver metallic buckles and a zipper. Or.. look! I just bought an acid washed denim jacket. Or a seductive wine colored silk dress. Or a red and black wool cape. I love making garments into something, and I love describing them. Thats it.

This is my fashion blogger love story. Whats yours?

How did you get so good at pairing things together? I find that a lot of the time, people go "wow, that's cute!" to outfits that have conformed to the idea of how outfits should be put together, but in reality, a lot of those outfits aren't really that cute and can't stand alone in terms of changing fashions (although a lot of them can). But you really put together pieces that go so well together, and all of your outfits are so beautiful. Do you have any tips or things you keep in mind when you put together outfits? I'd love to know :]

I love your story- I feel the same way.
And that what people wear really does mean something about them. I don't mean if you wear sweatsuits you're a bad person. If you don't care about fashion, you just don't. Some people don't like going to museums and looking at paintings either, that doesn't make them dumb or bad people. Maybe just not artists....I don't know. But, I am an artist in every way, and as with all artistic minds, clothing is a very very important avenue of self-expression- because it is in-your-face, and easy to share with everyone around you. It's probably the same reason I like and have tattoos. I like using clothing to express my emotions, my likes and dislikes, my moods, my heart, etc.!
I don't take "fashion" too seriously, but I love love love style and clothing and fearlessness in peoples styles.

Fashion, style, whatever anyone calls it, it all adds something to life. When I go into my closet and find something fantastic to wear, it makes me feel great. By dressing better than the uniform of jeans and a tee everyday it makes me feel like I can achieve something better. It's a release from the mundane.

Great story! And love the pics! I started my fashion blog as I got one of my answers to a Q' published in Vogue (winning me a year's subscription), which led me to realise that I love sharing my passion for fashion (eek, didn't mean to rhyme), as I don't really have many friends I could that with :) I especially love pieces with interesting details, classics with a twist, and unexpected style/colour combinations, but not being as I used to be, don't seem to take as many risks as I used to.

When people ask me why I spend so much on clothes/shoes? Because they are 'works of art', an expression of creativity, an extension of my personality :)

i wrote a novel originally, but deleted it after i saw its actual monstrous size.

i loved this post, though.

my love stories are in the mountains of band tees i've collected over the years, especially the ones from the early days when all it meant was going to a concert to live and scream and breathe a moment longer along with a band that seemed to be singing about the things that were important to me.

love.

Well,I guess if you can spend "$210 on a pair of heels you will only wear a handful of times" then more power to you.

Hopefully though, you understand how fortunate you are to not have a extremely tight budget.

Best blog post EVER! no, I'm serious! you wrote it so beautifully

I love fashion because even the simplest thing like the way you put an outfit together describes your personality in such a huge way. I like pushing the fashion boundries and I like trying new and different things. I like it because even though some may not realise it, it is truly a form of art. I love that you can take 1 item and style it 50 different ways. I can go on and on so I will just stop here

love the action photos and lovely fashion blogger story!

I love mixtures of textures, fabrics, colors, styles. I find it enthralling to take all the inspiration, trends, even marketing thrown at us each day and mixing elements of everything with my own spin. If i can inspire one person to take a risk or not care so much about what people will say about what you are wearing, but only caring what makes you feel good, then i think it's all worth it!

It's a really good answer to the 'why do you spend so much time and money...' question. I know if I had the money I would definitely be spending a lot more on clothes, quantity and quality wise.

I love the sound of that outfit too. navy tulle scarf, mmm.

love it!

I can't explain as well as you, but it's clothes and putting them together and creating something then finishing it of with nail varnish and hair and all the rest of it - it gives me a buzz. It's like a passion or something, a hobby. I love the satisfaction you get when you feel like you have something really well put together or individual or new.
I could go on but it might get a bit boring.

I hate it when people ask that question!

To that i say: everyone has their weaknesses on what they spend money on and what makes them happy. I like clothes and that 's what i choose to splurge on. For other people it's jewelry, for others it's electronics, some people spend a fortune on home decor or cars. Whatever makes you happy, as long as you can still pay your regular bills!

I guess I sometimes spend that much money on a single piece, because it's got that something special, that you won't find on a piece at H&M or some other cheap brand. I also love combining single pieces to one whole that makes people fix their eyes on you.

I love clothing...I like shopping for it, I love wearing it, and I just feel so alive when I put on a great outfit.

I don't have many clothes that fit me anymore...I used to hate shopping...but really, the truth was, I hated my body. So I let my mom pick out clothes for me and never really tried to have my own style.

I used to spend all my money on computers...now I'm slowly finding my own style, my own niche in the "fashion blogging" world. I really just like the idea of dressing up and looking and feeling great that day.

For example, when I went to a job interview, I wore my Louboutin pumps...and they gave me such a confidence boost. I felt TALL, on top of the world, chic, and glamorous...all from a pair of shoes! I LOVE that feeling...and I want to have it daily.

I don't have my own blog, but I love fashion. I love looking at spreads and trying to recreate something- to take an idea and make it out of MY pile of nothing and make it fit ME. I like that what I wear is my choice and an expression of me. Or that I can make myself look like someone totally different by what I'm wearing. I love how the colors and textures come together and please my eye, catch the light, or remind me of something. Mostly, I love the feeling when I get that first idea in my head for an outfit.
On a side note, I love the light and shadows in these photos. So cool.

Young Damsel said...

excellent explanation! i pretty much feel the same way, except i may also add that for me fashion is confidence, it's a personality. in a way, it defines who you are, who you want to be, and who you can be! it's a self-expressive way of life that makes up who you are<33

I think part of why I love blogging so much is because describing clothes and people and other beautiful things has always been something I loved. Writing is my primary passion, and the act of putting rich, eloquent, beautiful words onto paper and stringing them together into some gorgeous description - it's the same way I feel about putting outfits together.

Also, I think I just bought that tee :)

your words are totally meaningful, now you made me rethink my choices of clothes and the purpose of putting them on. maybe i shouldn't care too much on the price tag and focus more on whether i'm liking that particular piece...

Allie said...

I'm fascinated with the fact that appearances portray how one feels about themselves, how it conveys one's mood; I'm even in awe of how one's outward image affects the way others perceive them. And you're right; clothes, shoes, and acessories are just things until you give life to them. Fashion is so co-dependent on us, the wearers, the consumers, the non-dress forms. And it is an escape.

I started this blog to merely challenge myself stylistically, kind of a catalyst to satorial growth. And so I could also view my fashion in a relatively objective manner.

E said...

How incredibly well-put. I think a lot of us enjoy the idea of making a new character or personality out of pieces of clothing. It's art. It's drama. It's fun!!

I just love your descriptions. I love the way you narrate--so clear, vivid, and captivating. You have such a natural sense of style. I love see what you do with fashion. Literally--this is sad--but there will be times when I'm shopping and I'll look at something that I would never buy and think "Stylish Wanderer could rock the hell out of this. She would make it work" TIM GUNN REFERENCE :)--hope you watch project runway! But you are seriously top five of my favorite bloggers (honestly, probably even higher up than that.) And P.S I cannot WAIT to see what you do with that gorgeous indigo dress from Nasty Gal. (Um, no, I don't stalk your twitter?) :)

I'm so glad I check out your blog tonight.
I was typically well dress my whole life. My mother though raised me on making an outfit, like wear this red top with these jeans but not the beige skirt. So I kind of had some rules that now I try to get rid of. I love talking about the art of a good picture. I'm fascinated my Elle Von Unwerth and the Sartorialist.
Like a picture can capture your outfit and bring it to another level.
I'm so ready for my experimentation this summer with clothes. I already but some pieces that make me happy with out the blessing of my mother.

I agree that it's incredibly exciting to have a pile of fun and lovely clothes to play dress up with, but putting together clothes one can identify by their labels and which make one feel happy is more of a luxury than an art. To me, art is self expression, which I find to be quite different from creating an image. Art is more about the process-the NEED to express an emotion or thought-and the product is less important. Everyone has their own definitions of art but I think a concept or emotion is what mainly makes something art...just because something is breaking some kind of rule or isn't a trend or is pleasing to the eye...? I don't know, it's not the same. Disturbing things can be art. It goes beyond having a natural eye or looking effortless. I think the creator has to care a whole lot, not about presenting a finished product, but about saying what they need to say.

I completely agree with you on what you said about the pile of clothes on the floor. I LOVE describing clothes and for some reason, people find me pretentious for that. For example, I was in school explaining the materials for an architecture project and I said "drapes of light champagne pink chiffon" and after, this girl came up to me and said that I sounded like a bitch because of that. It was kind of depressing, but when you perfectly described those feelings, I felt like there ARE people that understand and I don't need to care if that girl thinks I sound like a bitch. yayy

Anonymous said...

I know where you're coming from with your thoughts on fashion. I think you did a good job of explaining wy clothing and style is important to you. What you didn't explain, however, and what I think people tend to be more questioning of, is the cost aspect. Can't you express yourself with cheaper clothing? Why is that pair of 210 dollar shoes worth it specifically? I'm not judging, because it's not really any of my business how much you spend on clothes, I just wanted to let you know.

The Stylish Wanderer said...

Anon 5:20, hey, I totally am the best goodwill shopper you will ever know. I was just using it as an example, why DO people spend so much? and then I was giving my answer. thanks for your comment. :)

Love the story.I believe that the firs impression you make on someone is what he/she wears. Before talking to someone, you make an impression based on that person's look. The problem is that too many people rely only on the look and the clothes, the designer's names and so on...You should keep going on with your style. It's worth being different. We can't all be the same. And i know the feeling when you have the clothes on the floor and you have an idea of taking that and that and puttingthem togheter. It makes you feel creative and happy. At least this is how it makes me feel. And if we can afford a more expansive piece of cloth that would satisfy us, even for the moment, why not buy it?In the end, it's not all about money.[That doesn't mean i buy ex[pensive clothes. Not at all.But i have moments when i find what i like-i rarely really like something- and i know i have to buy it.]
